Custom Paver Patios in Wilmington, NC & Coastal North Carolina

ENC Designs is a luxury design-build firm installing custom paver patios across Wilmington, Smithfield, Carolina Beach, Surf City, Hampstead, Wallace, and Leland. Precision-laid premium stone, deep compacted bases engineered to prevent settling, and every layout rendered in 3D before we lift a single paver.

A Paver Patio Is Only as Good as What's Underneath It

A custom paver patio is the foundation of every great outdoor room. Done right, it lasts thirty-plus years and gets better with age. Done wrong — with shallow base prep, undersized drainage, and cheap polymeric sand — it starts sinking within two seasons and needs to be torn out inside of five years. Eastern North Carolina Designs curates paver patios for luxury homes across coastal NC, and every installation starts with engineering that most contractors skip.

We build every patio on compacted aggregate bases of 4 to 6 inches minimum (more for driveways or heavy load areas), hand-set each paver to manufacturer specifications, and finish with proper edge restraint and polymeric joint sand. This is the unglamorous part of the job that separates a resort-quality patio from a two-year repair project.

Deep Compacted Bases. Proper Drainage. Integrity in Every Inch.

Coastal North Carolina brings two soil conditions that destroy poorly built patios: sandy coastal soils that shift, and heavy clay that holds water and heaves in freeze-thaw cycles. Both require a different base approach, and both are non-negotiable if you want your patio to look the same in year ten as it does in year one.

Our standard build sequence: excavate down 8 to 12 inches below finished grade, install and compact 4 to 6 inches of crushed aggregate in multiple lifts with a plate compactor, lay a 1-inch setting bed of concrete sand, hand-set pavers with tight joints, install edge restraint along every exposed edge, and finish with premium polymeric sand that locks the joints and prevents weed growth. On sloped sites we integrate drainage with the base — hidden behind a retaining wall or tied into a proper french drain system — so water never pools on the surface or undermines the base.

This is what we mean by "Integrity in Every Inch." It's not marketing copy. It's the difference between a patio that survives every summer thunderstorm and one that sinks into a birdbath every August.

Everything a Complete Paver Patio Installation Covers

A fully engineered ENC Designs paver patio is more than just stone on dirt. It's a curated surface built to last.

Luxury paver patio installation with natural stone accents in coastal NC
  • Full excavation — 8 to 12 inches below finished grade to create a proper base cavity
  • Compacted aggregate base — 4 to 6 inches of crushed stone installed in multiple lifts and plate-compacted to spec
  • Geotextile fabric (where needed) — separates clay subgrade from the aggregate base to prevent migration
  • Premium pavers — Techo-Bloc, Belgard, EP Henry, and other top-tier manufacturers with full warranties
  • Precision hand-set installation — tight joints, laser-leveled, proper slope for drainage (typically 1/8-inch per foot)
  • Edge restraint — concealed polymeric or steel edging to lock every paver in place forever
  • Polymeric joint sand — top-quality sand that locks joints, prevents weed growth, and sheds water
  • Integrated drainage and grading — patio pitched away from the home, tied into proper drainage solutions where needed

A Patio Is the Foundation of the Entire Outdoor Room

A paver patio isn't just a surface — it's the anchor that every other outdoor element sits on. That's why we almost always design patios in concert with the other pieces of your outdoor living space. The outdoor kitchen has to sit on a base that can support its weight and plumbing. The fire feature needs to be integrated into the hardscape so it looks intentional, not dropped on top. The low-voltage lighting wiring needs to be run before the pavers are set. The retaining walls and grading need to work with the patio's drainage plan, not against it.

Typical stand-alone patio projects run 2-4 weeks of active construction. Combined projects (patio plus kitchen plus fire feature, for example) are usually 4-8 weeks. Every timeline is locked in on the day you approve the 3D design, and you know exactly what's happening every day.

Paver Patio Questions from Coastal NC Homeowners

Premium paver patio pricing in coastal NC typically ranges from the mid-tens of dollars per square foot for straightforward installations to noticeably higher for complex layouts with borders, curves, and natural stone accents. Site conditions — existing grade, drainage requirements, and access — also affect pricing. Our Visionary Consultation includes a transparent budget conversation so you know what's possible before we start designing.

A patio built on a proper 4-to-6-inch compacted aggregate base with correct edge restraint and polymeric sand will look and perform the same for 25-30+ years with only minimal maintenance (a polymeric sand refresh every several years and the occasional joint touch-up). The lifespan comes entirely from the base, not the stone. Cheap base prep is why other contractors' patios start sinking in two or three years.

We work primarily with premium manufacturers including Techo-Bloc, Belgard, EP Henry, and select natural stone suppliers. Style selection is part of your 3D render — you'll see the actual paver color, texture, and pattern on your property before committing. We don't use bargain-bin pavers and we don't install anything that doesn't carry a manufacturer warranty.

Yes. Every patio we build is pitched away from the home at a minimum of 1/8 inch per foot, and on sites with real drainage challenges we integrate french drains or channel drains into the patio design itself. We never leave a patio that holds water, and we test drainage before the job is considered complete.

Yes — and a significant portion of our paver work is tearing out failed installations from other contractors and rebuilding them properly. We remove the old surface, rebuild the base to spec, and install a new patio with real engineering. In many cases we can even reuse a portion of the old pavers if they're high-quality stone in good condition.

A typical stand-alone paver patio takes 2-4 weeks of active construction from excavation through final sand. Larger projects or patios integrated with outdoor kitchens, fire features, and retaining walls run 4-8 weeks. You receive a day-by-day schedule the day you approve the 3D design.
