Custom Water Features in Wilmington, NC & Coastal North Carolina
Architectural water walls, koi ponds, pondless waterfalls, and custom fountains — curated for luxury homes from Wilmington to Smithfield. Every water feature is designed to work with nature, rendered in 3D before construction, and engineered for coastal NC humidity and drainage.
Water Features Designed to Work With Nature, Not Against It
A thoughtfully crafted water feature is the most atmospheric element you can add to a luxury outdoor room. The sound of moving water softens traffic noise, creates a meditative backdrop for dining and gathering, and attracts birds and dragonflies that turn a backyard into a living landscape. Eastern North Carolina Designs builds custom water walls, koi ponds, pondless waterfalls, and architectural fountains across Wilmington, Smithfield, Carolina Beach, Surf City, Hampstead, Wallace, and Leland — every one of them intentional, 3D-rendered, and engineered for the realities of our coastal NC climate.
Environmental Stewardship is a core ENC Designs value. That means efficient recirculating pumps, proper liner and plumbing specifications, native plantings around ponds, and designs that sit in harmony with the existing landscape rather than overpowering it.
Four Ways to Bring Moving Water Into Your Outdoor Room
Architectural water walls — vertical stone or metal panels with sheet-style water flow. Clean, modern, sculptural. They work beautifully as a focal point at the end of a patio or alongside an outdoor dining zone. Low-maintenance, highly visual.
Koi ponds — the classic naturalistic water feature. Formal or informal, with proper filtration, aeration, and planting shelves for aquatic plants. We build ponds sized for serious koi keepers as well as smaller ornamental ponds with a handful of goldfish. Every pond is planned for the life you want from it, not a generic template.
Pondless waterfalls — the most practical option for homes with young children, busy schedules, or HOA restrictions on open water. A concealed reservoir pumps water over a stacked-stone waterfall into a gravel bed, where it disappears and recirculates. You get all the sound and movement without standing water to maintain.
Custom fountains — from bubbling urn fountains beside an entry walk to multi-tier architectural fountains as the centerpiece of a formal garden. We render every fountain in 3D against your actual home so you see scale and proportion before anything is built.
Everything in a Complete Water Feature Project
- Custom design and 3D render — water feature rendered on your property so you see scale, materials, and sound direction
- Proper excavation and liner — rubber or concrete pond construction with reinforced subgrade and leak-tested liners
- Energy-efficient recirculating pumps — sized correctly for flow rate and total dynamic head, not oversized and wasted
- Filtration and aeration systems — mechanical, biological, and UV filtration where needed to keep water clear year-round
- Natural stone or architectural hardscape surround — integrated with existing or new patios and retaining walls
- Aquatic and marginal plantings — native and ornamental species chosen for pond zones (see landscape design)
- Underwater and surround lighting — low-voltage LED lighting for dramatic nighttime effects (see landscape lighting)
- Winter-ready operation — walk-through on seasonal care, pump shutdown procedures, and spring startup
From Sketch to Waterfall — The Process
Visionary Consultation
On-site walk-through to evaluate topography, sun, electrical access, and where moving water will have the greatest impact — near seating, at sightline endpoints, or near dining zones.
3D Design Render
We render the chosen water feature type into a model of your property, showing scale, stone, and surround hardscape.
Engineering & Specification
We specify the pump, filtration, liner, and reservoir sizing. Every calculation is done right the first time.
Construction & Installation
Excavation, liner, plumbing, stone surround, and planting integration. Leak-tested before we hand it over.
Walk-Through & Care
We run the feature with you, explain seasonal operation, and remain your partner for long-term maintenance.
Water Feature Questions
Not if they're engineered correctly from the start. A properly sized pump, a real filtration system, and thoughtful stone and plant selection will keep a water feature clean and quiet with only occasional care. Pondless waterfalls and architectural water walls are the lowest-maintenance options; koi ponds require more attention but are still very manageable with the right initial build.
Yes — eastern NC is well within the climate range for healthy koi ponds year-round. The key is proper depth (at least 3 feet in the deepest zone for winter protection), adequate filtration, and aeration. We design every pond for the specific property's sun exposure, tree cover, and runoff conditions.
A small pondless waterfall or bubbling urn fountain typically starts in the mid-four figures. A full koi pond with stone surround and plantings usually runs in the mid-to-upper five figures. Architectural water walls and large formal ponds scale from there. Our Visionary Consultation includes a budget conversation before design work begins.
Yes, and it's our most common request. We render the new feature inside a 3D model of your current landscape and hardscape so you see exactly how it will sit before any excavation. Water features pair especially well with existing patios, fire features, and curated plantings.
No. Moving water is the opposite of mosquito habitat — mosquitoes require standing, stagnant water to breed. A properly recirculating pond or fountain actually discourages mosquitoes. Fish in a koi pond eat any larvae that do attempt to develop. This is one of the biggest misconceptions about water features in the Southeast.
